Eberhart (USAF) assumed command. In conjunction with the activation, Joint Forces Headquarters Homeland Security, Joint Task Force Civil Support, and Joint Task Force 6, which had been assigned to USJFCOM, were transferred to USNORTHCOM. During the season, four major hurricanes hit the country, with one - Katrina - causing a level of devastation heretofore unimaginable by U.S. citizens and the world. USNORTHCOM was called into action to coordinate the active-duty military response for evacuation, rescue, and relief operations during Hurricane Katrina and subsequent storms. This booklet presents a selection of media articles contained in the USNORTHCOM Katrina Document Collection, which was compiled by the Office of History. In addition, photos gathered from various military sources illustrate the massive effort necessary to address these natural disasters. Information in this booklet represents only one aspect of the larger set of data found in the command's document archive covering USNORTHCOM's 2005 hurricane operations. 006954-US Northern Command-The First Year-October 2002 - September 2003 52 Pages2003 THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT The activation of U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM), on 1 October 2002, marked the first time a single military commander has been charged with protecting the U.S. homeland since the days of George Washington. Prompted by the September 11th terrorist attacks on American soil, USNORTHCOM's mission is to "deter, prevent and defeat threats and aggression" aimed at the United States, its territories and interests. Additionally, the command provides military assistance to civil authorities when approved by the President or Secretary of Defense. Its area of responsibility (AOR) includes all air, land and sea approaches to North America, encompassing the continental U.S., Alaska, Canada, Mexico and the surrounding water areas out to approximately 500 nautical miles. Personnel from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard are assigned to coordinate the protection of North America from external threats, drawing on the full combat capabilities of all U.S. military services, including the National Guard, as necessary.
