1 August 1943 -Today's Target Is Ploesti-A Departure from Doctrine

003958-1 August 1943 -Today's Target Is Ploesti-A Departure from Doctrine 49 Pages 1999 THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT The focus of this paper will be on the 1 August 1943 bombing raid on the Ploesti oil field and refineries by an American task force composed of bombardment groups of the Eighth and Ninth Air Forces. The Ploesti raid stood apart from the rest of the war in the air. The idea for it, and the unusual tactics employed, came from the top; it generated from General Arnold's headquarters and was approved by President Roosevelt. Winston Churchill called Ploesti "the taproot of German might." It was not a part of any particular campaign, but was considered vital in itself. It was painstakingly planned and executed relatively quickly by the best-prepared and most experienced force available at the time. It was also fought with unparalleled bravery, the sole action of the war for which five Congressional Medals of Honor were awarded. The purpose in examining Ploesti is to first gain a complete understanding of the events leading to the planning for the raid, the raid itself, and finally the impact on the Germans in its aftermath. With this established, the intent is to assess the raid while keeping one fascinating question in mind - after building a doctrine for twenty years based on high altitude, daylight, precision bombing, why, in its first major bombing effort, did the United States "depart from doctrine" and conduct a low level bombing mission on Ploesti, the only low-level bombing mission conducted in the war? 9 April 1940 German Invasion of Norway-the Dawn of Decisive Airpower during Joint Military Operations-1997

002922--9 April 1940 German Invasion of Norway-the Dawn of Decisive Airpower during Joint Military Operations-1997 45 Pages 1997 THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT Operation Weserubung, the German invasion of Norway during the Second World War, is considered by many military historians to be the first joint military operation involving the combined planning and execution of air, land, and sea forces. After a brief introduction and an explanation of the significance of Norway, Chapter Three will analyze the planning process and strategy used by the Germans in late 1939 and early 1940 for devising this joint operation. Chapter Four examines, primarily from an airpower perspective, the plan itself and its execution during the first day of the operation by the Germans, and the British response. Chapter Five determines how German airpower was used, and in particular, what effect the Luftwaffe attack on 9 April against the British Home Fleet had against Britain's campaign strategy to control the North Sea. The final chapter examines three important lessons United States military planners should extract from Operation Weserubung and apply to operations in the 21st century. They are: 1) the joint operation of air, land, and sea assets produce a synergetic effect greater than the sum of their parts; 2) a difficult part of joint operations is the air command and control; and 3) airpower can decisively deny the enemy use of the land or the sea. A Clash of Military Cultures: German and French Approaches to Technology between the World Wars

003990-A Clash of Military Cultures: German and French Approaches to Technology between the World Wars 39 Pages 1994 THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT This is a paper that was produced for a USAF Symposium. The period in between the world wars was at time of extraordinary technological development for the world's militaries. World War I had proven to be a technological catalyst. Such weapons as the tank, which was introduced in the war, enjoyed rapid development in the 1920s and 1930s. Accelerated by the war, motor vehicle development progressed, while every army engaged in motorization experiments. Radios and electronics passed out of their infancy as Britain and Germany developed radar. Most dramatic of all was the evolution of the airplane from a useful auxiliary weapon into a very powerful and decisive arm of the military. THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT

000676--A Comparative Study of KC-135 Operations in Vietnam, Desert Storm, and Allied Force 86 Pages 2000 THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT This paper examines the operational employment of the KC-135 in three major conflicts. Air refueling is central not only to the tactical operations of a campaign, but the strategic goal of supporting two near simultaneous wars. The efficient management of the tanker fleet is required, to ensure the nation's ability to achieve that goal. Examining the three major combat operations the KC-135 has participated in provides some insight into the issues and potential solutions faced by previous commanders and planners. A Concise History of the U.S. Air Force

003418-A Concise History of the U.S. Air Force 89 Pages 1997 THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT Except in a few instances, since World War II no American soldier or sailor has been attacked by enemy air power. Conversely, no enemy soldier or sailor has acted in combat without being attacked or at least threatened by American air power. Aviators have brought the air weapon to bear against enemies while denying them the same prerogative. This is the legacy of the U.S. Air Force, purchased at great cost in both human and material resources.

A Critical Analysis of the Generalship of General Douglas MacArthur as Theatre Commander in the Pacific during World War II

003991-A Critical Analysis of the Generalship of General Douglas MacArthur as Theatre Commander in the Pacific during World War II 46 Pages 1990 THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT Many critics have commented on the performance of General Douglas MacArthur during his tenure as Commander of the South West Pacific Theatre in World War II. Criticism is divided between those who praise MacArthur and those who attack him. This paper focuses on the reasons for the lapses in MacArthur's performance, specifically his hopeless plan for the defense of the Philippines, his questionable motives for insisting on the retaking of the Philippines, and his inconsistency in applying principle of bypassing and envelopment in operations to recapture the Philippines and the Dutch East Indies. Rather, that being the simple old soldier, driven by strict ideals of Duty, Honor, Country, MacArthur was seduced by "hubris" and questionable personal motives. When he allowed these factors take over, his generalship plummeted because he was serving MacArthur and not the nation. THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT

A Need to Know-The Role of Air Force Reconnaissance in War Planning, 1945-1953

004021-A Need to Know-The Role of Air Force Reconnaissance in War Planning, 1945-1953 234 Pages 2004 THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT On 1 April 2001, a US Navy EP-3 Aries II surveillance aircraft collided with a People's Liberation Army Air Force J-8 fighter plane that resulted in the loss of the Chinese pilot and an emergency landing on Hainan Island by the Navy plane. The Chinese government's 11-day internment of the Navy flight crew shocked and amazed the American public. The ensuing diplomatic crisis and war of words reminded many of similar incidents from the supposedly defunct Cold War. Depending on the age of the individual, the EP-3 crisis evoked memories of the 1983 Soviet shootdown of Korean Air Lines (KAL) flight 007 or Francis Gary Powers's ill-fated U-2 mission of 1 May 1960. Avid readers might remember a 1993 U.S. News & World Report issue devoted to "America's Top-Secret Spy War" that chronicled many of the 35 US Air Force and US Navy reconnaissance aircraft shot down from 1946 to 1961 with the loss of over 100 American airmen. The April 2001 collision focused world attention upon a still little known but highly significant aspect of the Cold War-strategic aerial reconnaissance. THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT

A War of Their Own Bombers over the Southwest Pacific

000710--A War of Their Own Bombers over the Southwest Pacific 179 Pages 2005 THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT Without question, attack and bombardment aviation during World War II is a huge topic. To cover it all would quickly become a monumental task. A very interesting piece of the larger picture, however, lies tucked away in a small corner of that war. Focusing mainly upon Fifth Air Force, I have done my best to present an accurate account of the nature of the air war in the Southwest Pacific Area. This study does not presume to be an all-encompassing operational summary; instead, it aims to provide a representative picture of American bombardment in that area. A-10s over Kosovo-The Victory of Airpower over a Fielded Army as Told by the Airmen Who Fought in Operation Allied Force

000675--A-10s over Kosovo-The Victory of Airpower over a Fielded Army as Told by the Airmen Who Fought in Operation Allied Force 364 Pages 2003 THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT Several books have already been written about OAF, though not as many as might have been expected given the implications for NATO and airpower that came out of that conflict. Those that have been written focus primarily on the strategic level, the events, diplomacy, and decisions by senior military and political leaders that led to the conflict and determined its conduct. This is not that kind of book. This is about the other end of the spectrum as told by those that flew and fought at the most basic level during the war-the A-10 pilots of the 40th Expeditionary Operations Group (EOG). Access To Space-Routine, Responsive And Flexible

003875-AUCSC54-999-04 Access To Space-Routine, Responsive And Flexible Implications For An Expeditionary Air Force 54 Pages 1999 THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT This is an exciting and challenging time for the United States Air Force. Technological advancements and the blurring of lines between the military and the commercial world create new dangers as well as opportunities. As the Air Force struggles to mold itself into an expeditionary force, issues concerning the integration of air and space become more critical. This research paper briefly discusses the larger issue of integration to set the context for discussing the specific issue of routine, responsive and flexible access to space and how it may impact the Expeditionary Air Force (EAF) construct. The Air Force must act quickly to develop doctrine and command relationships designed to maximize the combat capabilities engendered by routine space access. It is imperative to exploit these rapidly developing capabilities in order to not only remain the world's preeminent aerospace power, but to protect and defend the economic viability of our country and ensure the safety of our citizens. Aerospace Power in the Twenty-First Century-A Basic Primer

000677--Aerospace Power in the Twenty-First Century-A Basic Primer 351 Pages 2001 THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT Addressed either to the novice or any individual who wants to understand the rudimentary aspects of aerospace power, this book exposes readers to relevant aerospace capabilities, theories, applications, operational planning, and key issues. Theories and applications of aerospace power are not limited to the United States Air Force but apply to aerospace forces in general. Although the Air Force has forces and capabilities that include a very wide range of activities, other air and space forces reflect several of these same capabilities and many unique ones. Understanding how these forces operate can help both students who are new to aerospace power and individuals familiar with ground and maritime forces appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of air and space forces. Aerospace Power-The Case for Indivisible Application

000594-Aerospace Power-The Case for Indivisible Application 101 Pages 1986 THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT Gordon McCormick recently observed that "history suggests that the principal catalyst of doctrinal change is military disaster." Unfortunately, even though there are examples to the contrary, McCormick's association of doctrine and calamity is essentially valid. A detailed historical analysis of this premise would be beyond the scope of this volume; others have dealt with this subject very well.' However, some glaring examples come immediately to mind: the slaughter in the mire of World War I trenches caused to a major extent by a religious adherence by both sides to the spirit of the offense; the virtual strangulation of the British Isles during the first years of World War II for lack of antisubmarine warfare training and equipment even though the effectiveness of the submarine was proven during the previous war; and, of course, the prohibitive losses suffered by US bombers early in the European "strategic" air war due to Air Corps insistence on unescorted bomber penetrations (as compared to their splendid success after escorts were provided) .
