011763-Quartermaster Supply in the European Theater of Operations in World War II, Vol. 10 188 Pages 1949 THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT The subject of volume, I, the beginning, was chosen without difficulty, for Theater plans, policies, and procedures were the framework upon which the arms and services fitted their programs. Volumes that described the various quartermaster activities seemed the appropriate middle. As the series was being planned, the authors had no doubt that a volume on quartermaster supply during redeployment would be the logical end. The final volume, however, is by no means Aristotelian. Redeployment plans, based upon an 18-month period, provided for an elaborate readjustment and training program. Victory in Europe became a reality on 8 May 1945. Redeployment began on 12 May. The first atomic bomb to be used against an enemy fell on Hiroshima in the morning of 6 August. The second fell on Nagasaki in the morning of 9 August. The European Theater was notified on 12 August that Japan had sued for peace. The redeployment program needed no longer to be carried out according to the details elaborately set forth in both War Department and Theater plans. Thereafter changes were too rapid for accurate documentation. They were made, we are told, chiefly in face-to-face conferences and over the telephone.
