Recent history indicates a need to improve interagency coordination, at all levels, in the planning and conduct of MOOTW. 006717-A Short History of the United States Navy and the Southeast Asian Conflict-1950-1975 145 Pages1984 THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT For over twenty-five years the U.S. Navy participated in the American effort to defend the Republic of Vietnam from its enemies. Two million officers and men, 2,511 of whom gave their lives, served their country throughout the prolonged struggle in Southeast Asia. This short history, which is based entirely on declassified or unclassified sources, provides a broad overview of the part these men and women played in the war. In addition to outlining the command structure, it traces the Navy's role in riverine and coastal warfare, counterinsurgency, civic action, and advisory duty, as well as the service's more well-known carrier air strike, amphibious, and naval gunfire support operations. Also described are the ships and craft, weapons, aircraft, and units with which the Seventh Fleet and Naval Forces, Vietnam, fought the war. 000844-Assault from the Sea: The Amphibious Landing at Inchon 59 Pages 1994 THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT In light of the Navy's current emphasis on littoral operations, I believe that Assault from the Sea: The Amphibious Landing at Inchon, by Curtis A. Utz of our Contemporary History Branch, is an appropriate title for the series' second work. His monograph demonstrates how the Navy's veteran leadership, flexible organization, versatile ships and aircraft and great mobility gave the theater commander, General of the Army Douglas A. MacArthur, the ability to launch a devastating offensive against the North Korean invaders of South Korea. THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT - THIS IS AN EBOOK.

Chronology of War in the Pacific for 7 December 1941 to 31 December 1943 (ebook)

011438-Chronology of War in the Pacific for 7 December 1941 to 31 December 1943 16 Pages 1943 THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT This document by the Navy Department, Headquarters of the Commander in Chief document is a chronology of the Pacific War. There were comparatively few officers in the Pacific Fleet who had been on duty in the Pacific since the beginning of the war, and the majority had been there less than a year. Many had been previously in locations and duties which precluded them from following the day by day progress of war in the Pacific very closely, and since arrival there, they had little spare time for delving into past history. The following chronology up to the end of 1943 is compiled for their benefit, as a possible aid to them in familiarizing themselves with previous events and in acquiring a broader conception of the Pacific War in its entirety. Many events of supreme importance to the participants, such as air-strikes, submarine operations, minor surface engagements, and the loss of planes, ships, and men, have had to be omitted for the sake of brevity. Such omission is in no way an under-rating of the event or the services performed. THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT - THIS IS AN EBOOK.

CINCPAC-CINCPOA Bulletin No. 136-45, Defense Installations on IWO JIMA (ebook)

008470-CINCPAC-CINCPOA Bulletin No. 136-45, Defense Installations on IWO JIMA 130 Pages1945 THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT This document contains many full color maps, numerous pictures of the defensive installations that were destroyed, and drawings of the positions. The strategic importance of IWO JIMA need hardly be emphasized. Its value as an airbase midway between the MARIANAS and the heart of JAPAN has already been proved. After the occupation of SAIPAN, the Japs must have known that IWO would be attacked. The only question was WHEN. The story of their haste in constructing defenses is told in aerial photographs from 15 June 1944 until D-Day, 19 February 1945. At the time SAIPAN was invaded, only AA defenses, hasty fire trenches, and preliminary beach defenses had been prepared at IWO JIMA, By September 1944, positions had been constructed in depth behind the beaches. Company and platoon positions were then in evidence, and concrete pillboxes and covered artillery emplacements were under construction. By December, most beach positions were completed and had been strengthened by the construction of heavy concrete blockhouses. A cross-island defense line in depth protecting the northern part of the island was springing up along the high ground north of Airfield No. 1. Additional AA defenses, increased numbers of covered artillery and coast defense guns, and more and more concrete positions and minefields on the beaches were noted on each succeeding photographic sortie. By D-Day, key positions had been connected with pillboxes and were protected by covering fire from artillery, anti-tank guns, and mortars, previously sighted in. COMINCH P-0012-Amphibious Operations-Capture of Iwo Jima 16 February to 16 March 1945 (ebook)

003943-COMINCH P-0012-Amphibious Operations-Capture of Iwo Jima 16 February to 16 March 1945 134 Pages 1945 THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT The capture and occupation of the Marianas Islands gave our forces bases from which targets in the Japanese Empire could be subjected to VIR air attacks. In order to operate with greatest effectiveness and with a minimum of attrition, fighter cover for the long range bombers was required at the earliest practicable time. Iwo Jima was admirably situated as a fighter base for supporting long-range bombers between the Marianas and the Empire and offered sites for three airfields. Accordingly the Commander in Chief, Pacific Ocean areas, issued his Operation Plan No. 11-44, directing the Commander Fifth Fleet, as Commander Central Pacific Task Forces, to capture, occupy, and defend Iwo Jima and develop air bases on that island, to reduce Japanese naval and air strength and production facilities in the Japanese homeland, and to protect air and sea communications along the Central Pacific axis. The planning for and the actual execution of the Iwo Jima operation were affected to a considerable extent by the operations in the Philippines which immediately preceded it, and by the necessity of preparing for the Okinawa operation which was to follow it. Conflict with Libya-Operational Art in the War on Terrorism (ebook)

003888-Conflict with Libya-Operational Art in the War on Terrorism 42 Pages 1993 THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT The relevance of operational art in the low intensity conflict (LIC) environment must not be overlooked. A study of the series of U.S. military operations against Libya in 1986, and the events leading up to them, provides insights into how operational level thinking drove the military element of the long-term campaign against Qaddafi. This case study approach to the conflict examines how operational art was used in planning the operations, and the degree to which it supported achievement of strategic and operational objectives. It also addresses unique challenges faced by cognizant operational commanders in politically-dominated LIC scenarios. THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT - THIS IS AN EBOOK.

Cordon of Steel-The US Navy and the Cuban Missile Crisis (ebook)

003944-Cordon of Steel-The US Navy and the Cuban Missile Crisis 56 Pages 1993 THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT In the fall of 1962, the United States and the Soviet Union came as close as they ever would to global nuclear war. The U.S. Navy played a pivotal role in this crisis, demonstrating the critical importance of naval forces to national defense. The Navy's operations were in keeping with its strategic doctrine, which is as valid today as it was in late 1962. The Navy, in cooperation with the other U.S. armed forces and with America's allies, employed military power in such a way that the president did not have to resort to war to protect vital Western interests. Dictionary of American Naval Aviation Squadrons Volume I (ebook)

000840-Dictionary of American Naval Aviation Squadrons Volume I 596 Pages 1995 THIS DOCUMENT IS FURNISHED ON CDROM FORMAT This first volume covers the attack and strike fighter communities and includes VA (attack squadron), VAH (heavy attack squadron), VAK (tactical aerial refueling squadron), VAL (light attack squadron), VAP (heavy photographic squadron) and VFA (strike fighter squadron). Although VAK and VAP did not have a primary mission of offensive and defensive air-to-surface operations, they are included here because these squadrons operated attack-designated planes, such as the AJ-2 and the A-3 and its derivatives. The squadron histories in this volume cover only those squadrons that are currently designated VA or VFA or those that had the VA, VAH, VAK, VAL, VAP and VFA designations when they were disestablished. Any attack squadron redesignated VF, VS, RVAH, VAQ or VAW that did not revert back to VA is not in this volume. The lineage listing in Appendix 6 provides a cross reference list for all squadrons that may have had the VA, VA(AW), VAH, VA(HM), VAK, VAL, VAP and VFA designation.
